A new chapter on an old corner

The team behind the counter

Behind the counter is a small new team that has taken over the kiosk and gaming hall at Lyngbyvej 1. The goal is simple: to give the corner a shop that is as pleasant to visit as it is practical. We believe the good neighbourhood shop still has an important place in the city – the place where you pick up the paper, get a tip for tonight’s wine and say hello to the people who live on the street.

We approach the task with respect for the place. The corner has been a meeting place for almost 400 years, and we want to help write its next chapter with care, good products and proper service.

The name

Fælle Nord means “north of the Fælled” – the old common grazing land that is now Fælledparken, which begins just across the junction. “No. 1” is our house number on Lyngbyvej, and a promise that this is the first chapter.

And then there is the word itself. In Danish, a fælle is someone you live with, work with or share something with – or simply count as a companion. It comes from the Old Norse félagi, formed from fé (property or money) and lag (a laying together): originally a person who pooled money or property with others, or a member of a warband in the Viking Age. It is the same root as the English word “fellow”. That is the kind of place we want to be: one you share with your neighbours.

• Gaming hall – a calm, comfortable gaming hall for adults over 18.

We follow the rules, and we would rather ask once too often than once too few:

• Alcohol: we do not sell alcohol to anyone under 16, or drinks above 16.5% alcohol to anyone under 18.
• Tobacco and nicotine products: 18.
• Gaming hall: 18.

The future

In time, we want to open a small café and wine bar in the shop, with coffee, tea, wine, beer, chocolate and simple boards of charcuterie and cheese – with no kitchen at all. The gaming hall will gradually become both luxurious and cosy. Read more about the vision.
